The Magical System

Everyone holds magic within them, however not everyone can access said magic and those that can will need a vessel to hold their magic and then draw from it. Because of this most have Familiars, which because of their constant link to magic have their lives extended so that they can live alongside their Sorcerer companion. Some lucky few can put their magic into items however this is extremely hard to do and it is rare.

 

If a familiar is killed or the item is broken all of the stored magic will rush back into the sorcerer, this has been described by those who have experienced it like being hit by a flaming bus doing 90 mph while being soaked in petrol. Not only can this harm/kill the sorcerer in some cases it can result in limited magic (even after gaining a new item/familiar and rebuilding said magical level) or not being able to use magic anymore.

 

If a sorcerer loses their familiar/item and need to obtain another (like before, if its a familiar) they must create a bond with the animal so it not only trusts the sorcerer but cares for them. They will also (for both items and familiars) have to start all over again with their magic and regain the skills they once had as they will need to put their magic into the item/familiar all over again and the original skills would have been lost when the familiar died/the item was broken and the magic returned to the sorcerer.

 

Sorcerers are able to live for hundreds, even thousands of years. Physical aging will stop when they reach adulthood. Vampires are immortal and do not age after the time they are turned, or if they are born a vampire it happens around adulthood. Most nonhuman species follow the same rule of Vampires however it can differ and vary depending on the species.
